What does NICS stand for?

NICS stands for the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. This system is administrative and intended to assist Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) in determining whether prospective buyers of firearms are eligible to purchase them under U.S. law. The system was established as a result of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and became operational in 1998. It allows for a rapid check of available criminal history records to ensure that firearms do not get into the hands of individuals who are prohibited from possessing them, such as those with felony convictions or certain mental health issues.
